Our cat, Grace Mary Schmidt January 28 2017, 0 Comments

I’m sharing my thoughts today in remembrance of a good friend of our family: our cat Grace Mary Schmidt. None of us knew her precise age but our best guess was 17. Our daughter, Elaine, named her and included ‘Zebra’ as one of her many middle names. Gracie was very independent, but was always there when someone needed her. When Elaine’s wisdom teeth were removed, Gracie sat atop the couch’s armrest, where Elaine recovered. Whenever I was sad, Gracie would always seem to be there at the right time and place to sit with me and comfort me. I don’t know if all cats do this because I didn’t grow up with any pets. But as other pet owners may have experienced, it seemed that Gracie sensed how we were feeling, whether happy or sad, and was there with us through it all. When I started this business, Gracie loved that there were boxes everywhere that she could climb into, making herself a cozy nest among the bagged socks. When Garret and I officially became empty nesters, Gracie began accompanying me more and more as I stayed up late to work on the business. She’d always rest her head on one of my wrists as I typed. Last year, we launched our ‘My cat loves me – cat lover’ socks, which were inspired by my relationship with her. We truly did love each other. Gracie passed on the Tuesday after Christmas. I am crying happy tears as I write this, because I am grateful that my family and I had such a wonderful friend. Every time I see our ‘cat lover’ socks, I think about how I am thankful to have known Gracie.

Favorite Maya Angelou story August 21 2015, 1 Comment

One of my favorite stories is from Maya Angelou – she said that when she was about 20 years old…she was walking down the street beside her mother…and her mother stopped, turned to her and said: "Maya, I think you are the greatest woman I’ve ever met. Mary McLeod Bethune, Eleanor Roosevelt and my mother…you’re in that category." Her mother then walked across the street and got in her car. Maya said that she thought: Suppose she’s right? Suppose I am really going to be somebody?”  She then decided that she would stop smoking, drinking, and cursing - and live up to that. I have said those same words to our daughter, Elaine. She is the most amazing woman that I’ve ever known.

my mom August 20 2015, 0 Comments

My mom, Karolyn Tomasic, is the most positive person I've ever know. She also always has believed in me and has said encouraging things to me. The year before I started this business, my mom knew that I wasn’t content. She gave me a ‘tile’ that said ‘WHAT WOULD YOU ATTEMPT TO DO IF YOU KNEW YOU COULD NOT FAIL?’ That tile and thought has been on my desk ever since. Those words helped me have the confidence to start this business.

words are powerful August 20 2015, 0 Comments

Positive thoughts and words are very important to me. Some of the most meaningful things that have happened in my life involve words…specifically encouraging words. And I’ve created a business that is all about positive words. Our company and brand is ‘notes to self®’.  Our tagline is 'Words make all the difference™'.  I initially thought of saying…"the words you think and the words you say about yourself and the words you use when you speak to others really make a difference"…and then I condensed it to "words make all the difference™."

the journey August 20 2015, 0 Comments

I'd like to share some of the steps on this journey. I've always believed in the power of positive affirmations - phrases that we say to ourselves to build confidence and train our minds. For years, I've had positive affirmations like ‘I am confident’ all over my home and office….on sticky notes and I've written them on my bathroom mirror. This specific idea came to me on January 1st, 2011, while reading a book (on a road trip with my family...with my feet up on the off/socks on.) I was thinking about the fact that the best time to say positive affirmations is first thing in the morning and late at night, when the conscious filters aren't fully 'up' and the subconscious mind is most accessible. I thought, “What if I put positive affirmations on the toes of socks...then at least 2x a day, the person wearing them would see those words, and they'd be training their mind.” I also thought, “What if kids too young to read had ‘I am smart’ on their socks…what if that became one of the first phrases that they learned to say? How might that impact their entire life?” This picture is one of my initial drawings of possible designs. :)

positive affirmations February 04 2012, 0 Comments

Positive affirmations are phrases that we say to ourselves to build confidence and train our minds. They are bold, clear, positive, and stated in the present tense: "I am confident", "I am happy", "I am perfectly me", "I am smart", "I am strong", "I am blessed", etc. They work on the subconscious mind, which is most receptive early in the morning and late at night, because at those times, the conscious filters are not fully in place. Experts recommend writing out your affirmations, as though they are already a reality in your life, and saying them out loud several times a day. I've used index cards on my dash board, bathroom mirror, refrigerator, desk, etc. for years. Now I also have them on my socks! :) My wish is that these socks help people realize how wonderful they are and how much God-given potential they have, and that they can achieve their dreams. I have a dream of many less fortunate children who may not even be old enough to read, but will wear the socks...and subconsciously will have seen 'I am smart' so many times, that they believe it about themselves from the start. We are already donating socks to non-profit organizations, and are connecting with more opportunities to do that. Thanks for visiting this website and this blog. You are awesome!
